This specimen is a beautiful slice of pyrite with seraphinite botryoidal crystal habit on top of the pyrite. Weighs 8.7 ounces and measures 5.5 x 4.5 x 0.125 inches. From Russia with love. 

Seraphinite is a type of green clinochlore, a member of the chlorite group. Seraphinite was named after its resemblance to feathers due to its chatoyancy, or cat eye effect. With some specimens the resemblance is quite strong, with shorter down-like feathery growths leading into longer "flight feathers". Named for the Seraphim angels, a celestial or heavenly being originating in Ancient Judaism. Found only in a limited area of Siberia, Russia.

This material is mined exclusively from the Korshunovskoye iron skarn deposit in the Irkutskaya Oblast of Eastern Siberia. It apparently acquired its name due to its resemblance to feathers due to its chatoyancy. Seraphinite is named after the biblical seraphs or seraphim angels.
